Would you wear a Cameo?

Dec. 2, 2010

The word Cameo is thought to come from the Hebrew word kamea ( amulet) The Cameo is shrouded in history and mystery. Greece and Rome had cameos of agate
Shell came much later. Carvers can still be found near Naples. Maybe you have a signed Cameo . Hold it to the light and hope you find a name Like:
Benito Ruolalo - Garofolo or Gaglione

.

The cup of Ptole was from Alexandria during the First century. It was stolen in 1804. When found it was missing the Gold base and Gems. The Queen of France is said to have used it as a chalice for Communion.

It is a masterpiece of antiquity

This is a cameo agate Claudia

Set almost the feel of Wedgwood

This is a shell Cameo
Princess Diana's

The Gold Sheperdress

This gorgeous gold framed lady with a bird is carved from Sardonyx

Hello Yvonne

Interesting post -- I have to locate my grandmothers cameo's and hold them up to the light. Either way their are still lovely,

Love the last two, very unusual never seen those styles before.

I love the cameos portraying individual women (the shell one with Diana, the gold framed lady with bird, the ivory one).

I used to wear cameos in the past. At present, I'm not wearing anything around my neck.

Just gorgeous, Yvonne. I used to have a beautiful cameo ring but over the years I don't know what became of it. It was beautiful, set in gold. I probably lost it. I once threw two rings (not cameos) down an old incinerator by mistake when I was first married. I still remember it.
But I've never seen cameos like some of the ones you've shown. Wow.

Gorgeous and informative post, Yvonne! I don't own a cameo, but when I was younger I used to wear my mother's cameo brooch sometimes, and I loved it. Oh, and I'd love to own a cameo ring!
