I use 'Sluggo' - it is non-toxic to birds and wildlife and comes in pellet form. You can also use a pie pan or shallow pan full of beer. The slugs love it and drown in it. It's gross to empty, though! As for the deer....that is tough. I've tried motion lights and that seems to work.
