Highclere Castle,

If you have been watching PBS on Sunday The Downton Abbey
series This is the castle that
it is filmed at Highclere
(harklrer)
Three miles south of Newbury.

Henry-George Reginald Molyneux Herbert
was 7th Earl of Carnarvon

This is the Eighth Earl. He really has
a huge job keeping this place up.
For all you designers here's some floor
plains to dream about.

They say his friend Andrew Lloyd Webber
came over to give some tips..

Original owners were
Bishops of Winchester
Earl of Carnarvon

Robert Sawyer Herbert
Henry Herbert
Charles Barry.

This is Main Saloon

Great post Yvonne! Of course, i did not miss last night episode. I have" friends with Castles.." and taking care of such a task is a life efforts, long gone the glamour of being the earl of such estates. Most castles in Bordeaux(near my parents's village) are either in dire need of repairs or sold to conglomerate such as LVMH, these historical castle become a brand for these international owners.

Wonderful post on this fascinating place. It is filled with contrasts from the rusted locks to the incredible salon. I imagine that the stories and the mysteries over the centuries are abundant!

Well, you've done our homework. It
appears you know a great deal about Highclere Castle, its design and owners.

The interiors of the castle as displayed in your pictures of the saloon, the music room, the library - look grand.

What a gorgeous place. But what a cost to keep it looking that way. At least the rooms you've shown. The falling apart stuff must be hidden from view when they film Downton. :)

Carnarvon is a familiar name. The 5th Earl along with Howard Carter, discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.

What an incredible castle! I couldn't even imagine how much it woud cost in upkeep.

With all that is going on in my life these days I've had little time for TV. Perhaps I will catch up on Downtown Abbey on DVD one day in the future.

I haven't been watching that show - I'd never heard of it until blogging friends started talking about it.

That castle looks amazing - I can't imagine the work involved in upkeep!

Have a wonderful day, Yvonne!
