When I was about 18, I met Larry Hovis
through my Cousin, they were dating.
Later I became friendly with him. Larry use to play
and sing at the Neiman Marcus Fashion shows
also appeared at Sak's Dept store fashion shows.
A few years later I knew him when he worked
at my Husbands Supper Club. Then he took
off to Hollywood and the next time we saw Larry
he was on Hogan's Hero's, what a surprise.
As so many of our friend's we lost contact.
We moved to Miami Beach, the late 60's.
I just heard he passed away.
At the same time in Houston, I knew Kenny Rogers.
Kenny Rogers looked us up in Miami Beach,
when he was doing a show. His wife Margo
stayed with us for a few weeks,
while he was in the Christie minstrels.
Houston-born Rogers formed his first band while in high school in 1956 and never quit making music from that point on. The rockabilly group, called The Scholars, got a record deal and released two singles that had local success, and led to a performance spot on American Bandstand. Soon afterward, Rogers joined the Bobby Doyle Trio, playing stand-up bass in the jazz band, at the Rib Eye supper club on Holcomb Blvd and Main Street. That was the club My Husband and I owned. The club was acress the street from the Shamrock Hilton. While Kenny was working at our club Kirby Stone ( Kirby stone 4) took him away from us and he went to Vegas. We went there to see him and I met Kirby's wife. She was sooo hollywood. In 1966 he became a member of the New Christy Minstrels, He was married to Margo my girlfriend then.
He left them leaving a year later to form The First Edition with other members of the troupe. Then he hit it big and disappeared of the face of my world. So it goes.. Arnett Cobb played in the Jazz group in our club, He was an awesome tenor Sax. He was very sick in the sixty's and we went to see him. He had TB. Died a year later. We met Lionel Hampton through Arnett.
Age is awful, I wouldn't even know him ,if I passed him on the street, nor he know me.
